Overcoming the Addiction for Internet Porn

Internet porn addiction is extremely destructive to marriages and other familial relationships. Every second in the United States $3,075.64 is spent on pornography online and 28,258 Internet users are viewing porn.

If one uses the third statistic I found that 10% of those that become involved with porn become addicted, every second in this country there are 2,825.8 new addicts per second! That is a HUGE number of people.

Porn addiction destroys lives and families in many of the same ways that drug addiction destroys families.  There is the added component that as a sexual addiction the mate of the addict may feel rejected or somehow inadequate, leading to more pain and suffering.

Some signs of porn addiction are:

  • Inability to stop using porn despite best efforts and previous attempts to quit using porn.
  • Anger and/or Irritability when asked to stop using the porn.
  • Hiding and/or keeping secret all or part of the porn use.
  • Living a secret/double life related to pornography.
  • Continuing behavior even after obvious and life shattering consequences such as a relationship loss and/or job loss.
  • Getting lost in the pornography problem through spending more time than intended or losing time.

This is only a sampling of signs that one has a problem, and like a drug addiction treating the problem involves a support system, therapy, sometimes medication, and often a 12-step program.

It is important that someone suffering from this addiction be treated in much the same way a drug addicted person would be, with respect and compassion but in a way that keeps the dignity of the people being hurt by the behavior as well.

Included with this article are 4 links that may be helpful to those suffering from pornography addiction whether it is on or offline and to their families. If you or someone you know/love is suffering from this addiction there is no shame in reaching out for help. Millions of people in the United States are suffering the same problem and getting help for it.

Pornography addiction does not have to destroy your life or your family, getting help can put you in the position of reconciling with those that you have hurt (or have hurt you) and can allow you to put your life back together by giving you important tools.

Don’t let your life become one of the millions of lives destroyed by addiction.
