Detox Doctors and Addiction Treatment

detox doctorsThere are many treatments available for people who have an opiate addiction.

Typically these treatments involve a detox doctor prescribing drugs like Suboxne and Subutex to help the patient kick the addiction and deal with any withdrawal symptoms they may encounter.

Detox doctors will usually use Subutex while the patient is under their direct care and Suboxone for when they go home, with the doses being reduced as they go through drug detoxification.

Other detox doctors prefer to use an alternative treatment plan where they give the patient sedatives so they are asleep for the length of the detoxification. There are other ways to treat drug addiction but they are not administered by a doctor and are not recommended.

Dangers of Detox

The process of detoxification can be very dangerous, even lethal, if done without the supervision of a detox doctor. A person’s body does not respond well when drug use is suddenly stopped. Some of the dangers include heart failure, moderate to severe problems breathing, and seizures.

Curing the Addiction

Whether or not addiction can be cured is a major topic of debate among detox doctors. The popular train of thought is that addiction is a disease as well as a chronic mental health issue that can be treated but not cured.

When addicts are no longer abusing their drug of choice they are considered to be in recovery but a traumatic event such as losing a job or death of a loved one could cause the patient to relapse.

Drug treatment is a lengthy process that must consider both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction. Detox doctors are experienced with helping addicts curb their craving and lead a drug free life.

If you or someone you know requires addiction therapy, consult a detox doctor and do not attempt to go through the detoxification process on your own.
